Up until the late 1850s, Americans were forced to lug around huge cents. Finally, the very first small cent—the legendary “Flying Eagle”—was issued in 1857. The coin proved to be incredibly popular, but the Mint curiously issued it for only one more year—1858—before replacing it with the Indian series. A real treat for collectors, this two-piece set features both 1857 and 1858 Flying Eagle Cents. America’s shortest-lived cent, these first-ever small cents remain popular today 150 years after they were last struck!
