With its rugged design of a Native American on the obverse and a powerful buffalo on the reverse, the “Buffalo” Nickel struck a chord with collectors for its depiction of America’s Wild West. Interestingly, when it was first released in 1913, there were two distinct varieties. The first, or Type I version, has the buffalo on a mound. Later Type II varieties were redesigned so that the mound appeared as a thinner line. The coins we have available are all the first-year Type I coins graded in Extremely Fine condition. With the release of 2001 Buffalo silver dollar Proof and more recent $50 Gold Buffalo coins, interest in first-year-issue Buffalo Nickels has been heightened.
