The .999 pure Silver Proof aptly nicknamed 'Freedom for America,' is highly prized by collectors and historians. The handful of originals were commissioned by Benjamin Franklin and presented to George Washington and his Generals as well as the King and Queen of France after British defeats at Saratoga and Yorktown. Originals are so rare, they have sold for over $200,000 each! For the first time in over 200 years, original dies housed in the Paris Mint Archives were used to create these affordable 40mm silver Proofs bearing crisp detail and amazingly deep mirrored relief.
Obverse: The Infant America strangling two serpents symbolizing the defeat of the British armies at Saratoga and Yorktown. Victory in these battles guaranteed the success of the American Revolution. The goddess Minerva is shown defending America from the British Lion. The legend in Latin, Non Sine Diis Animosus Infas translates as 'The infant is not bold without divine aid.'
Reverse: Flowing hair Liberty with freedom cap on a pole. This is the first appearance of America's Lady Liberty. The design served as a model for the very first U.S. coins. The legend above, Libertas Americana gives the piece its name and translates as 'Freedom for America.' The date below, 4 Luil 1776, honors the date of the Declaration of Independence. |
