The largest and heaviest circulating silver dollar in U.S. history is a mystery to most Americans. Why? Because it never circulated in the United States! From 1873-1879, America issued the classic Trade Silver Dollar to compete in the tough Oriental market. Each coin contained more silver than famous Morgan Silver Dollars that circulated throughout the country at the same time. Most Trade Dollars that circulated in the Orient were stamped with “chop marks” to verify their silver content. The specimens we have are without these marks—a seldom-seen find.
