For millions of Americans at the turn of the century, a week's wages consisted of a 'Woodchopper.' This woodchopper didn't cut firewood for the family stove though. It was actually a $5 currency note that got its nickname from the stoic image of a pioneer-era man and his family.
Much larger than today's notes, these Woodchoppers were issued in the Series of 1907, making them America's LAST oversized 'horseblanket' legal tender $5 notes. The dramatic vignette and ornate scrollwork have made them a collector favorite for generations. Each specimen comes in Very Fine condition or better, so all of the rich detail can still be savored, nearly a century later! |
