| Here’s a Civil War-era bank note that served BOTH sides; a Norfolk, Virginia Exchange Bank $50 Note issued in the 1850s-60s. While many banks during this era issued paper money, the U.S. government did not. And, while some paper currencies were frauds and other banks failed, the Exchange Bank soldiered on. Its notes were more readily accepted than official Confederate paper currency, and they even found use beyond the South’s occupation of Norfolk. This scarce note is a real piece of Civil War history. |
