During the Civil War, a lack of circulating coins threatened to destroy the economy as Americans hoarded their money. To solve the problem, the U.S. Treasury allowed banks to issue fractional paper currency. The 3-cent notes in this offer are interesting because they’re the only notes of this denomination. Issued only from 1862-1876, these bills are fascinating Civil War-era artifacts.
