Prior to the Civil War, thousands of independent banks took it upon themselves to solve the nation’s currency problem by issuing their own notes. When these banks went belly up, they left behind a series of obsolete “Broken Bank” notes. This beautiful note, issued between 1854 and 1856 by a Rhode Island bank, represents a remarkable piece of history.
