These Crisp Uncirculated “Star Notes” are unusual pieces of U.S. currency that feature a star (*) as the last digit in their serial number. Star Notes are replacement notes, substituted by the Bureau of Printing and Engraving when dollar bills are made with errors or misprints. Serial numbers cannot be duplicated, even if the original note is destroyed, so a Star Note is produced to replace the destroyed note. As such, few exist because the U.S. Treasury Department seldom makes errors.
