| Discovered in a dusty chest in a European monastery, this 1,000-year-old coin is the first coin ever to portray Jesus Christ. Revered for centuries, it has been among the most sought-after of all Christian artifacts from the Byzantine Empire. Struck by hand more than a millennia ago, this circulated Byzantine bronze coin still exhibits nice detail. Its image of Christ with a halo around his head is plainly visible through the centuries-old patina. |
