| Saved from destruction during the Russian Revolution, these 1912 500 Ruble Bank Notes featuring Peter the Great came from a very small bank hoard. This is the highest denomination currency ever issued by Imperial Russia. The huge 5''x11'' size indicates these crisp notes were never intended for daily transactions. A bank note of even 50 or 100 Rubles would have been seen only by the wealthy. Crowned Czar of Russia in 1682 at the age of 10, and Emperor of Russia in 1721, Peter invited European craftsmen and merchants to his capital of St. Petersburg, thus opening Russia to the West. His portrait on this historic note reveals his importance in Russia. |
