The last big copper penny was issued in Great Britain in 1970, marking the end of a centuries-old tradition. Here is a complete five-coin set of 20th Century British Pennies—a big copper struck for each of the five Monarchs who ruled Britain during the 20th Century—from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II. It came to the point that the copper in this large 31mm coin was worth more than the face value of the coin, thus bringing a conclusion to the tradition. All were circulated and certain to have bought many pints and pies!
