| Larger than a U.S. Silver Dollar, this 41mm coin is as enormous in size as it is in history. Maria Theresa was the Empress of the Austrian/Hungarian Empire from 1740 to 1780. She was the only woman ruler in the 650-year history of the empire. She was also one of the most successful monarchs, even while bearing 16 children of her own! Struck in 1782 in .883 fine silver, the Austrian Thaler (Dollar) was used in the early U.S. along with Spanish silver coins. The Austrian Mint continues striking the Maria Theresa Thaler to this day, but always with the date 1780 to commemorate the year of her death. |
