Struck in the Spanish “New World,” these coins circulated in the Far East—and they have the marks to prove it! Spanish 8 Reales were one of the few silver coins that merchants in the Orient would accept in trade for goods, so they were commonly found in this region. As part of trade practices, each time an 8 Reale was used in a transaction from one merchant to another, a “punch mark”—a family symbol or name—was stamped into the coin as an endorsement the coin was valid. Each punch or “chop mark” is unique, so no two silver “Chinese 8 Reales” are alike!

Each is a wonderful look back to a time when endorsing money was common practice—many years before endorsing or signing over checks became standard practice in the West. Each 38mm, .901 fine silver coin is from a unique but small hoard that we recently secured. Call now to order yours!
